This cut paper pop-up book was based on two German woodcut prints from the 1500’s that were published in newspapers to depict celestial phenomena. The two woodcut prints are pictured below. I wanted to convey in the piece the change in attitude between the 1580 report and the 1582 report on the northern lights in Augsburg. In just a two year span, the phenomena went from being viewed as a miracle to an omen of disaster.
